(Last visited May 2021)
If we go for a family walk, we usually try to explore lesser-known places. However, although we know Holkham well, a new nature trail was opened around the lake in April 2021 so we thought we’d pay it a visit!
The trail is a 2.5 mile loop around the lake with information posts around the route, each with interesting facts about the wildlife at Holkham throughout the year. On our visit, the deer were out in their hundreds and we were absolutely mesmerised by them! So many ducks and geese too!
The Woodland Play Area is amazing and you can hire bikes too. We’re going to explore the other trails by bike on our next visit and we also want to try the ropes course and deer safari. The website is great – have a look around it to find out about what else there is to do on-site.
Walk information:
- Nature Trail length: 2.5 miles – I’d recommend walking anti-clockwise for really little legs who might not make it round the whole walk
- Café: Yes – Courtyard café
- Play area: Yes – it’s brilliant
- Pushchairs/Wheelchairs: There are accessible paths around the Holkham Estate, but the nature trail route is probably too uneven for wheelchairs. There are no obstacles, but it is a bit uneven and stony in places. We saw people with pushchairs but be prepared for a few bumpy bits.
- Dogs: You can take them on leads in the main areas, but only assistance dogs in the hall
- Toilets: Yes – baby change is available in the stables toilets near the café
- Picnic area: Lots of space to sit, but watch the ducky-doo-doo!
- Opening times: 9am-5pm every day
- Parking: £5.00 per day (additional charges for some of the attractions but the play area is free once you’ve parked; walks also free). You can redeem the parking charge in the gift shop on purchases of £20.00 or more. £3 discount on attractions if you arrive car-free
