No Dogs Allowed

Whilst I love my family dog, I know this isn't the case for everyone and many kids are frightened of them. After lots of information requests about "dog-free" spots I thought it would be a good category to include.  Nature reserves are usually a good spot if you wish to avoid dogs but hopefully there are enough below to give you some options (more to be added too).

Plantation Garden

(Last visited summer 2018) This is a little magical little garden tucked away near the Roman Catholic Cathedral.  It has an amazing Gothic fountain, a Medieval wall, a rustic bridge, woodland walkways and beautiful lawns and is a Grade II English Heritage registered garden. It’s very small – a beautiful garden spot for a micro […]

Barton Broad

A lovely little walk, just a few miles north of Wroxham.  It’s about a two mile round trip from the car park, down a (very quiet) country road. The views across the fields on the first stretch before hitting the boardwalk section were beautiful. You then walk around the most magical boardwalk, surrounded by trees […]

Filby Broad

What a little gem! Filby Broad is small but perfectly formed. It’s such a good little walk for toddlers as it’s quite short, so not too far to carry them back if needed. Nice and flat for pushchairs too. It’s a little out and back walk with a lovely view over one of the broads […]

Lower Wood, Ashwellthorpe

This is a lovely Norfolk Wildlife Trust woodland reserve about eight miles out of Norwich. Brilliant for den building. Unfortunately the main insect around is Mr. Mosquito in the summer and we were bitten to bits so don’t forget the insect repellent (and keep an eye out for ticks). We took a pushchair in the […]

Hickling Broad

(Last visited October 2018) Hickling Broad is massive – it’s the biggest broad – so in normal times you could spend a whole day exploring all the paths. It is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs as a lot of it is boardwalk or compacted surface. In recent times there has been a one-way route of […]

RSPB Strumpshaw Fen

(Last visited June 2021) I absolutely adore this place, I’ve been going since I was a kid and it was one of the places we really missed during the first lockdown. It’s just so rich with wildlife – so many butterfly species in the summer we lost count. If you’re into your birds it’s amazing […]

Thursford Wood

(Last visited October 2020) Possibly the most magical wood I’ve ever been to – so many hollow trees, we lost count! Our hypothesis that it was a fairy wood was confirmed when we found the fairy window and door inside one of the trees 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️ The leaves are starting to turn here and I think […]

Sculthorpe Moor

(Last visited July 2018) We found Sculthorpe Moor in summer 2018 and it’s very access-friendly. It’s all board-walk apart from a short section at the beginning. Wheelchairs, pushchairs and double pushchairs will be absolutely fine. It has a nice mix of landscapes and features: woodland, rivers, streams, bridges, dykes, benches, information points, scrubland and fields. […]

Foxley Woods

(Last visited May 2021) This little beauty is mainly known for its beautiful bluebells in May, but we’ve had lovely walks through the woods here in at various times of the year. It’s a Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve – a very straightforward loop through the woodland and back along a track. There was little by […]

Upton Broad

(Last visited July 2020) Take the wellies! Yes, even in the summer! I’d say this is a walk for slightly older kids who are okay near water as it has a network of dykes alongside the walks. The ground is low-lying and even in the summer it is very spongy – we were wearing trainers […]

Ranworth

This is a beautiful place and perfect for a family walk at any time of the year… but it comes alive in the summer!  I’ve been coming here since I was a child and I never get bored of it.  There is much on offer and I am seeing it with a new set of […]
